Become a Personal Trainer
Body Blueprint is looking forward to helping you with all of the steps to become a Personal Trainer. It can all be done online or in class here in Victoria (or through private courses at your request).
You have come to the right place for getting a Canada-wide certification (and we will have information coming soon on getting ACE certified throughout North America and beyond). All of our courses are approved by British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) and so we can easily help you with the steps to get fully certified with them. BCRPA is a high standard fitness certification and can be used nationally.
Note that if you plan to take all 3 of our courses (Fitness Theory, Weight Training, and Personal Training) online, we have a package option for $899, which saves you $148 (note this package price does not include exams or external fees to BCRPA).
Step 1: Fitness Theory Course (in class in Victoria or online from anywhere)
The In Class Fitness Theory course runs over 3 days: Friday evening 5:30 to 9:30pm, Saturday and Sunday 8:30am to 4:30pm. Please see the dates this class will be running in Victoria. There is a short pre-course reading assignment and quiz and you will complete a final assignment within two months of finishing this course. You will be given a full-colour hard copy manual and workbook.
With the online course, you can begin right away. You are given 4 months to complete it, but you could easily do it within a month (or less) if you put your mind to it. It includes 8 assignments, which you submit to us for evaluation and we return to you with thorough feedback. This course includes a full manual and videos and tutorials to help you learn the information.
The Fitness Theory final assignment makes sure you are prepared for the BCRPA provincial exam. After you complete this, you will receive a Fitness Theory Certificate from Body Blueprint.
If you have done this course before or have previous knowledge in Anatomy and Physiology and Fitness Theory, you may be interested in taking the Fitness Theory Refresher Challenge course instead of the full course.
Step 2: BCRPA Fitness Theory Exam
When you are ready, you may take the provincial Fitness Theory BCRPA exam. You are given one hour for this exam and it is offered online only. You can find more details about this on the first BCRPA link here.
Step 3: Register with BCRPA
Once you pass the BCRPA exam, you pay BCRPA your $99 registration fee, which insures you as a student and allows you a year from that time to complete your next specialty module (Weight Training). This step cannot be skipped – must be done before Weight Training.
First Aid and CPR
Your First Aid and CPR must be complete and up-to-date before you can be fully registered with BCRPA.
For First Aid and CPR, we recommend Alert First Aid if you are on Vancouver Island. BCRPA Registered Fitness Leaders and registration candidates are required to have current CPR and First Aid certifications at all times. These certifications must come from the following organizations or from companies that are authorized by them to provide these certifications: Red Cross, St. John’s Ambulance, Canadian Ski Patrol, the Lifesaving Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Note: The BCRPA does NOT accept online CPR or First Aid certifications
Fitness Leaders are required to have a minimum of CPR-A certification and either Emergency First Aid or Standard First Aid certification.
Step 4 – Weight Training
This enjoyable and thorough course covers every aspect of weight room instructing including how to design safe and effective programs, different types of programs to match different goals, how use machines in the gym as well as body-weighted exercises.
The In Class Weight Training course runs over 3 days: Friday evening 5:30 to 9:30pm, Saturday and Sunday 8:30am to 4:30pm. Please see the dates these classes will be running in Victoria. You will complete a final assignment within two months of finishing this course. You will receive a hard copy manual in this course.
The online course includes written and video assignments (you film yourself doing the exercises in a gym; home gyms are best if you have access to one, otherwise you will need special permission to film in a gym. If there is no other option, the exercises can be mimicked at home). You will have 4 months to complete all of your assignments, though it can easily be done within one month.
After you complete the Weight Training course, you will receive a Weight Training certificate from Body Blueprint, but you will not be certified in Weight Training until you complete the next step.
Step 5 - Weight ICE
Once you finish the Weight course you must complete the Weight ICE (this can be done in person or over video), which involves completing BCRPA forms to fill out and a small practical session. Be prepared to make time for yourself to do all of the work on the forms (about a week). ICE means Instructor Competency Evaluation. Once we mark this and return it to you, you submit it to BCRPA for approval (they generally take 4 to 6 weeks to approve it).
You will be a certified Weight Trainer at this point, but that doesn’t allow you to work with clients one-on-one, until you have your Personal Training. However, you can stop here if you like, but you will have to keep up your certification by taking 16 continuing education credits (CECs) every 2 years. This is easy to do as we offer many quick and easy online workshops to achieve this.
Step 6 - Weight Training Programs
On your own time, you are asked to write up Weight Training programs for friends, family, and future clients. This is great practice for becoming a full Personal Trainer.
Step 7 – Personal Training course
The In Class Personal Training course runs over 4 days: Thursday and Friday evening 5:30 to 9:30pm, Saturday and Sunday 8:30am to 4:30pm. Please see the dates these classes will be running in Victoria. You will complete a final assignment within two months of finishing this course. This course includes a hard copy manual and workbook.
The online course includes 13 written and 4 video assignments (you film yourself doing the exercises in a gym; home gyms are best if you have access to one, otherwise you will need special permission to film in a gym. If there is no other option, the exercises can be mimicked at home). You will have 4 months to complete all of your assignments, though it can easily be done within one month.
After you complete the Personal Training course, you will receive a Personal Training certificate from Body Blueprint.
Step 8 - Personal Training Exam $65 (plus proctor fee)
Once you finish the PT course, you have a PT exam (it takes 3 hours and must be done in-person; it can be done here at our office or by choosing your own proctor in your home town https://www.bcrpa.bc.ca/media/44299/proctoredexamrequest-aft-pt-exams-july2016.pdf).
Step 9 - Personal Training ICE (practical Evaluation)
Once you've written your Personal Training Exam, you have another ICE. This can be done on the same day as your Exam or after. If can be done in person with us or over video. Once this is marked and submitted to BCRPA for approval, you will be a fully certified Personal Trainer.
Keeping up your Registration:
Once you are fully certified with BCRPA, you will need to pay a registration fee and submit 16 credits every 2 years to BCRPA to stay registered. This is what our online Continuing Education Credit (CEC) Workshops are for.
Personal Training Groups of 4 or More:
If you wish to small (or large)-group train, or teach boot camps, you will need to also become certified in Group Fitness.
